DR. HANNAH FRY

Mathematician, Science Presenter and all round badass

Having studied fluid dynamics and working briefly in F1, Hannah returned to academia and now lectures in the mathematics of cities. She’s also a science broadcaster, bringing numbers and data to life on TV and radio in programmes including The Joy of Data, City in the Sky, and The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry. She examines how maths underpins almost everything and the world of data, how it’s gathered, what it can (and can’t) tell us, and how it’s applied from tracking down serial killers to predicting customer needs.

LINDA LIUKAS

Programmer, storyteller and illustrator

Linda is a Finnish computer programmer, children’s book writer and programming instructor. In 2014, her "Hello Ruby" coding book for children raised $380,000 on Kickstarter, becoming the platform’s most highly-funded children’s book. Her book is the world’s most whimsical way to learn about technology, computing and coding. It is a story about a little girl with a big imagination who knows even the biggest problems are just small problems stuck together. The kids get to go on an adventure with Ruby and her friends – all while learning the basics of computational thinking through stories and exercises.

Linda co-founded Rails Girls, a site designed to help women learn basic programming. Thanks to her involvement, the approach has become a worldwide success, leading to workshops in over 160 cities. Liukas also works with the online training platform Codecademy which provides courses free of charge. In 2013, the European Commission gave Linda Liukas the title of 'Digital Champion of Finland'.

COPENHAGEN SUBORBITALS

Non-profit, open project for manned space flight on a micro size spacecraft

Copenhagen Suborbitals is a non-profit, open project, amateur based space endeavour, funded entirely by private sponsors and donors. They build suborbital space vehicles – designed to pave the way for manned space flight on a micro size spacecraft, and on a micro size budget. The main goal is to launch a manned space vehicle into a suborbital trajectory, reaching a peak altitude beyond the Kármán line 100 km above the surface of Earth, and subsequently landing the spacecraft safely. To fulfil this mission, they design and construct a series of launch vehicles and spacecrafts, as well as the necessary infrastructure to launch, operate and recover the equipment. The project has a 100% peaceful purpose, and is not in any way involved in carrying explosive, nuclear, biological or chemical payloads.

Copenhagen Suborbitals was founded by Peter Madsen and Kristian von Bengtson, and is staffed only by volunteer part time specialists.
